Diamond Girls, starring Regina's Amanda Trapp, is a one-act, one-woman show which recounts the exploits of three Saskatchewan women who played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
Join us as we celebrate the achievements of these remarkable inductees from the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame, Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, and the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
"A natural performer, Trapp is in her element paying tribute to famous Saskatchewan sportswomen Mary Baker, Arleene Johnson Noga, and Daisy Junor, along with numerous other personalities. With the aid of Kenn McLeod’s effective direction, Trapp impressively weaves between characters and showcases her versatility." Jennifer Trijo, Serenade Files (Adelaide Fringe).
"Trapp is like the Energizer bunny and she moves around the stage where she plays 21 characters, including reporters, managers and charm school instructor. The show is as fast paced as New York Yankee Aroldis Chapman’s pitch . . . a great show for theatre buffs and sports aficionados alike." Celeste Villani, The Advertiser (Adelaide Fringe)
"Rather than a rehash of the film, A League of Their Own, this play brings to life Canadian prairie women who made up a disproportionate percentage of the league. . . Diamond Girls presents nuanced, poignant portraits of fierce players, who nonetheless needed to ask their husbands' permission to pursue their dreams. . . Fun, funny and brought a tear to my eye." Shawna Dempsey, CBC Manitoba (Winnipeg Fringe).
"I found myself rooting for these women in the first professional women's baseball league. I was caught up in their brave adventures as these small-town prairie girls made it big despite the pressures of marriage, children, and women's accepted place in the world. They dreamt big, played big, and made a legitimate name for women in sports. Go, Diamond Girls!"- Elan Morgan, Regina Fringe Reviewer
"A time capsule that holds history, heart and laughter . . . .Diamond Girls is not only one of the best plays of the (Potash Corp Saskatoon Fringe) festival, it is engaging for all mindsets, history buffs, sports aficionado and theatre lovers." Ezekiel McAdams, Planet S Magazine
"Diamond Girls, The Elephant Girls and Not Enough are three of our favourite one-woman shows." CBC Review Crew.
